And just like that our Camino is done!

2 weeks went by in a flash. We finished our walk with friends at a spectacular Medieval Fiesta in a small town called Hospital de Orbigo, just outside of Astorga.

The walk into (and out of for that matter!) is unremarkable – along roadways, through suburbs and industrial parks. But it was worth it to get to the beautiful city of Leon. It’s one of my favourite places on the Camino trail.

First stop – got to have a calamucho, a typical drink for this area. Red wine and coke! It shouldn’t work but it does (and they’re not all mine 🤣)

Leon has a beautiful Cathedral, which is spectacular at night.

The stained glass windows are amazing

We had a rest day here exploring the city. Even did a little shopping (I scored a new dress and some makeup for my post Camino life). even though this wasn’t our last stop, it kind of felt like the end. But we hoisted our packs on again…

Bye Leon!

We followed the signs…

And eventually arrived at the small hamlet of Villar de Mazarife.

We met a Frenchman at the local bar and managed a great conversation with the help of Google Translate.

The next day was our official last walking day together. Our morning photo…

Sad pilgrims 😢

This was the coldest day we had. The wind was biting. I was the only sensible one who put their jacket on at the start, they all succumbed soon after. It was so cold!

Scenes from the walk out …

And then we arrived at Hospital de Orbigo! It was a visual feast!

Families take this very seriously!
These two were a bit scary, but look at the effort!
Many musical troupes paraded through the town
Tree man!
There were dancing maidens…

We watched knights practising their skills for the jousting tournament. Ours was the White Knights. Cute, but his skills at hitting targets and staying on his horse were sadly not up to speed…

What would a medieval festival be without an owl or two!

The street entertainment was great!

This was a torch procession at 1:30am! We were a little worried that some of the costumes were going to catch fire. Safety is not a priority here 🤣

So that’s a wrap on our Camino for this trip. We treasured the time with our friends – it was lovely to reconnect after so many years. We decided we were all great walking companions so here’s to many more.
