When your friends decide to walk the Camino…

You join them, of course!

We are spending the next couple of weeks walking the Camino Frances with our dear friends from Brisbane. We have known each other for decades, our kids were babies together. They are walking the full distance, we will join them from Burgos to Astorga.

We left Cadiz very early to catch the 630am train to Madrid. I love Cadiz even more when the ancient streets are quiet, and the old street lights are on to guide your way. Our train trip was uneventful. In Madrid we caught the bus to Burgos, our starting point for the walk. Burgos is another beautiful Spanish town with a spectacular Cathedral and charming shops and restaurants. We had a lovely time reacquainting ourselves with the town.

The Burgos Cathedral is stunning

There are many bronze statues in Burgos. Here are a few:

A pilgrim tending to his feet!

I enjoyed watching locals doing their thing…

A local out walking his cat!

Burgos is also the start of the Meseta section of the Camino – the part that messes with your head because of the long and often monotonous distances between stops. It forces you to go inward, to reflect. It’s great for sustained introspection, if that’s your thing.

We were all looking forward to getting started (little did we know what were in for!).
