As I write this post I am sitting in the Mercado Céntrale in Cadiz. It’s Sunday afternoon, and while the official market vendors are off enjoying their Sunday (and catching fish for the trading day tomorrow), the place is bustling with locals and visitors alike enjoying tapas from the many food stalls that circle the space. I am tucking into a plate of local salamis and a glass of Vermut locale.

It’s mother’s day back in Australia so I’m also celebrating. I have raised two rather impressive humans, both of whom have achieved great things in their rather brief time on the planet. 🥰
Back to Cadiz…
We arrived on Monday, after an extraordinarily long journey via Abu Dhabi. I’m not complaining. We arrived safely, no dramas, and we are moving into the cadence of daily life here like locals. This will be home for the next few weeks.
Cádiz is a beautiful small city in the south of Spain. It’s the oldest city in Western Europe, founded by the Phoenicians around 1100BC. It was a significant port in the Roman Empire and there is a huge Roman amphitheater that was discovered here in the 1980s. Today Cadiz is a popular port for cruise ships, is popular with Spanish tourists for its beaches, and has a thriving university community.
We are attending Spanish language school for the next couple of weeks. I’m really looking forward to it. I am frustrated by my inability to hold a conversation here, so I’m determined to master the language and converse like a local soon!
