Lovely Lisbon – you gave me the Gypsy Kings, summer heat and the best natas so far!

What’s not to love about this bustling city? We arrived on the last weekend of the month long Lisbon festival and the city was in party mode! And it was hot! Finally!! So we caught up with some Camino family and headed to the alfama for some food, dancing, and fun.

The smell of roasting peppers and grilled sardines (a national favourite at this time of year) was everywhere!

We weren’t the only ones partying. Spotted a bucks group from Austria kitted out in their lederhosen! Took a sneaky shot.

On Saturday our Camino friend Emanuel and his lovely girlfriend Ana took us on a tour. We drove along the coast to Cascais and stopped at Boca do Inferno (Hells Mouth) – a pretty impressive blowhole. Luckily all was calm in hell that day!

We also stopped at the most western most point of Europe and almost got blown away…and experienced a little wardrobe malfunction (oops!).

Then we drove to the medieval town of Sintra and marvelled at the castles and gardens. Even saw the inverted tower!

Haven’t been getting many dog cuddles here, so I had to settle for this…just not the same.

That night we continued to party at the big open air concert in the main plaza featuring- wait for it-  the Gypsy Kings! We all were Bambole-ing and singing ‘Volare oh oh, cantare oh oh oh oh’ with as much gusto as we could muster! We capped off the weekend with a walk to Belem (it turned out to be a 21km day – just like a normal day on the Camino!) to taste what lisboans claim to be the best natas in Portugal (those cheeky custard tarts I can’t get enough of. Oh and hey did you know they actually have no calories? Yup not a single one…). Well I had to taste a couple just to be sure. And they were pretty damn good!

So good to catch up with our Camino family again!
