Nuts about Natas, potty for port, but you can keep your weather Porto…

Now as I write this I am very aware that Melbourne is currently experiencing ‘extreme’ winter weather…but hey, this is Portugal and it’s summer and, well, hot it isn’t! The last few days has been very cool, and intermittently raining, as we have explored the beautiful city of Porto on foot.

It’s a charming place, with its old town medieval buildings, majestic bridges, its thousand churches (not quite, but there is at least one just about everywhere you look!) with their hand painted blue tile facades.

Buildings are tiled in blues, yellows and greens, making pretty streetscapes

The food is…interesting. I love love love the little custard tarts (natas). I have to limit myself to one or two a day because I’m not walking the Camino anymore and things could get ugly.

The Porto wine (Port) is delish too. And excellent to wash down a nata or two… we sampled a few in the many wineries here. I don’t quite get the patriotic pride they have in their ‘signature dish’ here – the francesina. Unless you’re into meat, cheese and eggs in a big way, it really is nothing to write home about. (seems that I am anyways!). Still I had to try it!

The street art here is amazing…this was done in a few days!

Cats are everywhere! Clearly doing laundry was hard work!

And just for Rigan (and in between torrential rain showers) we took a quick photo at the bookstore that inspired Harry Potter…

So there is Porto, next stop Lisbon. And now back to my natas…
